“Avoid Boring People” (James D. Watson)
Natureで紹介されていたので買っておいたのをこの休みに読みました。
例によってWatson氏の自慢話の寄せ集めなのですがこれがおもしろい。
副題はLessons from a Life in Scienceとなっていて本当にLessonsがついています。
例えばchapter 3 Manners picked up in graduate schoolで大学院時代の生活からの教訓では
- Choose a young thesis advisor
- Expect young hotshots to have arrogant reputations
- Extend yourself intellectually through courses that initially frighten you
- Humility pays off during oral exam.
- Avoid advanced courses that waste your time
- Don’t choose your initial thesis objective
- Keep your intellectual curiosity much broader that your thesis object
などが挙げられていてなかなか教訓的な解説がされています。
Chapter 10はManners appropriate for a Nobel Prizeです。本当にいやらしいですね。
大学院生の抄読会などに使ってもいいかも。
英語も平易です。
amazonの在庫はOxford University Press版はあと一冊、ぼくはKnopf版を買いました。こちらはぼくが買ったので在庫無しになり二週間待ちです。
